If you still don't have "Now Playing," Jim Wilson's latest album on VINYL featuring producer/drummer Phil Jones, it's a record where "all kinds of early '70s feels abound on each track" and it also boasts heavy hitter guest stars like Mike Campbell (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac), Marc Ford (The Black Crowes, Magpie Salute) and the legendary Muscle Shoals keyboard master, Spooner Oldham. A great variety of current rock & roll music.

"If you don't feel like dancing to tracks like "Favorite Song," "Out Of Your Mind," and "Disillusion," you don't have a pulse. An album that gets better with each listen."

Notes
from Jim Wilson, February 2019

The “Rockers Delight” EP is an assortment of rock & roll songs that we recorded while making the “Now Playing” album. We wanted to make a 10 song album and we ended up recording 18 songs. A couple of those tunes will definitely be included on the next album Phil & I do together, but some were unique enough to need their own space. We talked about picking out some of the weird heavy ones and letting them breathe a little as a separate EP release. So here it is!

Thanks to Phil, as always, for supplying great sounds and amazing drum work. I’m excited to share these little gems with anyone who wants to listen. I personally think it’s the best and most rockin’ 4 song EP since “Long Tall Sally” was released in 1964.

1. ALL WRONG, ALL RIGHT
JIM WILSON-Vocals, guitars, bass
PHIL JONES-Drums, percussion

My songwriting always gets 70's comparisons, but I guess you are what you eat. There are at least a thousand musical references in this song, both lyrically and melodically. See if you can spot them all!

"All Wrong, All Right" is a song about musicians and the life we chose and being on the road. And also the great feeling you get when you’re confident enough to know that no one can touch you. Musically, it's Slade, Roy Wood, Cheap Trick and "Elevator"-era Rollers with a shout out to one of my favorite Karu songs.

2. HOTT
JIM WILSON-Vocals, guitars, organ
PHIL JONES-Drums, percussion, bass
BERNARD FOWLER-Vocals

Thank you to Bernard Fowler for making this dream a reality. I originally recorded the vocal harmony myself, all with just a simple overdub. But I thought, hang on a minute, it'd be awesome to do a Sam & Dave type thing. And then Bernard said yes! At the beginning of the session, he asked which part I wanted him to sing. I said "I'd love it if you did the high part". Then we sang it live together and we killed it.

Oh yeah, all the girl’s names are musical heroes of mine and outside of my imagination, they are all innocent.

3. I KNOW
JIM WILSON-Vocals, guitars, bass
PHIL JONES-Drums, percussion
GIA CIAMBOTTI-Background vocals

This song was one of the first four that I recorded after getting together with Phil Jones at his studio. He told me to bring some songs over, so I brought four the first day. It's a rock & roll gospel song because I do know where I'm going to. Me & Phil recorded the basic track live with just guitar and drums. More blistering guitars were added and the drums were turned up louder. Gia showed up and helped make it a bit more funky.

4. TAKE FOUNTAIN
JIM WILSON-Vocals, guitars
PHIL JONES-Drums, percussion
SPOONER OLDHAM-Organ
JAMES “HUTCH HUTCHINSON-Bass

Also one of the first four songs Phil and I recorded together, this ode to Hollywood features the one and only Spooner Oldham on organ (can you say "Mustang Sally"?). But it really didn't fully find it's way until James "Hutch" Hutchinson laid down an amazing bass line to Phil’s drums and congas.

Broken dreams aside, Bette Davis famously gave the brilliant title advice and I tried to add a few pointers to anyone who's contemplating the lure of show biz and sunshine. And if the sidewalk could talk, he wouldn't let anyone walk all over him.

Free MP3 of HONEST MISTAKE (Live in Toronto)

I transferred my iPhone bootleg recording of “Honest Mistake” from Massey Hall in Toronto on June 10, 2014. It was a tribute show to Daniel Lanois that was produced by Hal Willner featuring a stellar cast of vocalists including Emmylou Harris, Martha Wainwright, Andy Kim, and I was fortunate to be the bass player in a house band of musical heavies. Hal included my song on his playlist for the night and I was thrilled and nervous.

Having just played Massey Hall a month before with Emmylou, I walked to center stage and someone yelled “Yeah, Pipe!” It was my turn to pay tribute to my musical brother. My “joke” at the top was due to the preceding act, a stunning performance of Daniel’s “Moondog” by an eclectic 10-piece orchestra of young teenagers.

Daniel  watched from the side of the stage and you can hear him jokingly shout, “Now? You come to the front now, Jim?,” which is a reference to me being buried behind the orchestra while singing three-part harmony with him and Trixie Whitley earlier in the set. Jazz legend Bill Frisell played the guitar solo and Doug Wieselman used his Rickenbacker to emulate Daniel’s original pedal steel intro hook. The two drummers were Steve Nistor, my cohort who played on the original recording, and Jim White from Dirty Three. And don’t forget the amazing Rob Burger on keyboards, who’s a little buried in the mix because he was on the opposite end of the stage. My phone was close to my bass amp, as you’ll hear—it’s raw and 100% live. Anyway, here is what was. Turn it up and thanks to anyone who listens! Jim

LYRICS from the album 'JIM WILSON'BLEEDINGBaby please try and understand
I carry a bleeding love in my hands
Can’t seem to reach you from where I stand
    Written pages, hotels and stages
    Can’t get the message through
Taxis and backseats, drinks to relax me
All I can think of is you
    I sure hate to separate
Tell me is it my fate?
    Baby please try and understand
I carry a bleeding love in my hands
Bound to fall from where I stand
    Shattered moonbeams shoplifting my dreams
Where can I run to now?
Misconception, definition seems to be different than mine
Is it too late to speculate?
    Is it my fate?
    Baby please try and understand
I carry a bleeding love in my hands
Can’t seem to read you from where I stand
    Your opinion, never near ya
    Sometimes I disagree
    Reminiscing, not revisiting
Seems like a burden for me
Is it too late to make my case?
    Is this my fate?
    Baby please try and understand
I carry a bleeding love in my hands
Can’t seem to reach you from where I stand

    HONEST MISTAKE
All the fun we had in the city
And all the fires we burned for a thrill
It seems to me that you’re afraid of losing
To prove you have control you shoot to kill
You talk to him now and then just to check in
And I have to pretend like I don’t even exist
I always seem to be laughing at my pain
Right through the heart then give it a twist
I guess promises were made to be broken
And a dream is just a dream when you awake
And you can’t blame me for making an honest mistake
I don’t have the time to sit and argue
I got a million things to do today
I am not in the mood for another lecture
Besides we said all there is to say
And this time around I point the finger at you
Have these guilty feelings wiped away
Invite your demons out to keep you company
Hope it’s not too hot in your hell today
I guess promises were made to be broken
A dream is just a dream when you awake
You can’t blame me for making an honest mistake
I guess promises were made to be broken
A dream is just a dream when you awake
You can’t blame me, no you can’t blame me
    For making an honest mistake

    THINGS ARE LOOKING UP
I won't go there anymore in case I might see ya
And God knows if I saw you today I wouldn’t want to be ya
How can I trust you when you do me like that?
Hissing at me like an alley cat
Yeah, you’ve gone too far this time
So I’m moving up to the front of the line
Things are looking up, since you walked out the door
Things are looking up, and I don’t cry anymore
Things are looking up, thought I was losing my mind
Things are looking up, I’m tired of wasting my time
Jump into the golden river and drown all my misery
I’m turning into someone that I never want to be
Gathering up my strength I’m starting today
Keep on pushing, nothing gets in my way
Girl you’ve gone too far this time
So I’m moving up to the front of the line
Things are looking up, since you walked out the door
Things are looking up, I don’t cry anymore
Things are looking up, thought I was losing my mind
Things are looking up, I’m tired of wasting my time
    No more looking down
Pick me up off the ground
    Got to break, breakin’ out
Of this blue funk that I’ve found
Extract myself from all of these surroundings
My mind is racing, my heart is pounding
Things are looking up, ‘cause I don’t cry anymore
Things are looking up, things are looking up
Things are looking up, thought I was losing my mind
Things are looking up, and I ain’t wasting no more time
    Things are looking up

    HOLDING OUT FOR LOVE
    Holdin’ out for love
    Holdin’ out for you
I’ve been holdin’ out for something
    I can hold on to
The tug of war between us
    The space that you invade
    The price for my tomorrow
    With lonely tears I’ve paid
    Holdin’ out for love
    Holdin’ out for you
I’ve been holdin’ out for something
    I can hold on to
    A lonely heart is screaming
    A mime in reverse
    Laughed when I was crying
I’m not sure which is worse
    Holdin’ out for love
Want to get up, get up for you
Want to get up, get up for you
Want to get up, get up for you
Want to get up, get up for you
    Want to get up
    Holdin’ out for love
    Holdin’ out for you
    Holdin’ out for something
    I can hold on to
    Rivers of tears I’m weeping
    My soul’s already drowned
    I’m looking for somebody
    To turn it all around

    HOT SHOT
Dancing Charlie’s new soft shoe shuffle
Found himself in an uptown scuffle
With an underage star of stage and screen
But I say my, my, my
    I won’t say nothing
I promise not to tell a soul
Hot Shot, show me what you got
Cause it’s really getting out of control
It won’t be long ‘til we find out who’s the whore
Up swept Tallulah with a drink in her hand
Trying to rob a man of his wedding band
But nobody cared and nobody dared to stop her
And she said my, my, my
    I won’t say nothing
Your secret is safe with me
Hot Shot, show me what you got
Don’t take it away from me
And time will tell who’s going to hell
Mario’s crazy and it sure gets hazy
When you’re jumping off the Emser Tile
This town will kill you if you let it
Don’t you let it make you crazy
    My, my, my
    I won’t say nothing
Your secret is safe with me
Hot Shot, show me what you got
But don’t take it away from me
    Hot Shot
    Show me what you got

    CRY NOW (PAY LATER)
I wouldn’t blame you for all my struggles
    I’ll share some responsibility
A future of darkness was all that was visible
A brighter empty was all we could foresee
When the karma is dealt out
I’m sure I’ll pay for that
But I only have to cry now
The strongest temptation swept me up with its tide
Crashing down around me like a storm
Sit back and watch it crumble all around us
And while the empire falls the King is gone
Now the fire has gone out
I know I’ll pay for that
But I only have to cry now
When the bottom has dropped out
I know I’ll pay for that
But it’s my turn to cry now

    KILLER
There’s no need to have an alibi
Unless you’re leading a reckless life
I’d like to think my suspicions are wrong
But sometimes the truth cuts like a knife
All of a sudden I turn and you’re gone
And everyone in the room is all alone
Where you walk I’ll be following
Turn around, I’m right behind you girl
    There’s no mistaking
    Your heart is breaking
Out on the ledge and there is no edge
    You are the victim
    The blood is trickling
She’s on the loose and there ain’t no use
    She’s a killer
    There’s no warning sign
It’ll grab a hold of you
And throw you both out on the street
    Me and my sanity too
    There’s no mistaking
    Your heart is breaking
Out on the ledge and there is no edge
    You are the victim
    The blood is trickling
She’s on the loose and there ain’t no use
You know you want it-She knows she got it
You can’t deny it-Stand up and try it
Don’t you deny it-Get up and try it
You can’t deny it-Get up, try it
    She’s a killer
    She’s a killer baby

    CONVICTED
On the other side of midnight, there in the corner
Is the girl of my dreams, object of my desire
It’ll crack you up, my desperate situation
Because it’s funnier than Lenny Bruce or Richard Pryor
    I’m tried, it’s true Convicted
    Guilty of loving you Convicted
Driving in my car stuck in the traffic on Sunset
I know your whereabouts, I know where you’re going to
I fixate on the back of your head through the window
Just give me a chance, girl let me prove it to you
    I’m tried, it’s true Convicted
    Guilty of loving you Convicted
    Nobody saw the attack
She got a knife in the back
    There’s nothing you can do
    Tried, true, convicted by you
Before I started walking I learned how to run
She spat in my face as I pulled out my gun
Don’t try to scream, I’ll rip out your tongue
My Daddy said, "Son, make sure you get what you want"
Park on the street, a block away from your front door
My hands grip the wheel, heartbeat’s the only sound
Creepin’ around, sneakin’ a peek through your window
Pull down the shades, better not turn around
    I’m tried, it’s true Convicted
    Guilty of loving you Convicted
    Nobody saw the attack
She got a knife in the back
Cry as I cut off her hair
    I’m gonna throw her downstairs
Make sure the door has been locked
    Don’t answer if someone knocks
    There’s nothing you can do
    Tried, true, convicted by you

    BUS 27
Stare at the sun and wonder why
Do you shine your light on me?
Bus 27 take me to town
Where you can shine your light on me
They want their day in the sun
Don’t wanna live under the gun
    A place to be somebody
    That’s what they want
Looking at the rain and wondering why
Do you cry down on me?
    Bus 27 take me home
Where they shine a light on me
I wanna rise like the sun
So many rains are gonna fall
    It’s Wonderland or bust
Forget about all that’s said and done
Changing places, faces, hands of time
    Color scheme, elevate sublime
Marching in a line that’s single file
Blind leading the ones who are not blind
    All that I’m looking for
Is someone who knows what the truth is
    Help me find a way
    Take me away from here

    LET IT RUN THROUGH YOU
Let it run through you, see what it can do to you
It’s in you now and you gotta get it out
Can you hear the music, tell you what to do with it
Gotta find a way to share this thing I found
    Fascinating to me
    Harmony with the melody
All I want to do is sing
Let it run through you, see what it can do to you
It’s in you now and you got to get it out
Can you feel the music, show you what to do with it
Gotta find a way to share this thing I found
    Vibrations violating me
    Involuntarily
Without a choice I close my eyes and let the music flow
Let it run through you, see what it can do to you
It’s in you now and you gotta get it out
Can you hear the music, tell you what to do with it
Gotta find a way to share this thing I found
    Let it run through you
    Let it run through me
    Let it run through you

    RUN & RUN
Run and run, you won’t get far
Run and run, where you are
Run and run, you’re gonna fall
Run and run, you can’t get there
    Run and run, in despair
Run and run, you’re going nowhere
Don’t move and nobody will get hurt
I got the gun but nobody gets hurt
    Put down the phone
    Pick up the pace
    The movie’s begun
    Let’s cut to the chase
Don’t move and nobody will get hurt
    And you just keep on
Run and run, you’re fading fast
Run and run, from your past
Run and run, you’ll finish last
Run and run, you’re out of breath
Run and run, it’s sudden death
Run and run, you’re dripping sweat
Don’t move and nobody will get hurt
Love is dangerous, it’ll kick you to the curb
    I can’t get to sleep
    I can’t sit still
    Swallow my pride
    It’s a better pill
Don’t move and nobody will get hurt
    You just keep on
Run and run, you never win
Run and run, I lost again
Run and run, I’m wearing thin
Run and run, you never stop
Run and run, until you drop
